The United Kingdom pledged, on Monday, to offer £1m to support Egypt’s battle against the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic through the World Health Organization (WHO).
The money will be used in order to strengthen the Egyptian Health Ministry’s COVID-19 response, a statement by the WHO explained.
The statement said that the financial support will help the WHO provide personal protective equipment (PPE) for medical teams and other basic equipment to Egypt including disinfectants and lab equipment.
The WHO will also start an electronic training for medical personnel working within quick-response teams in different Egyptian governorates.
British Ambassador in Cairo, Geoffrey Adams, said in a statement that his country is committed to backing Egypt through the WHO to face this unprecedented global challenge.
Meanwhile, the WHO representative in Cairo, Naima Al Qusayr, said the organization welcomes UK support of Egypt to help face the current pandemic through boosting the healthcare system.
Last July, Adams met with Minister of International Cooperation, Rania Al-Mashat, to discuss ways to enhance the British-Egyptian cooperation during their fight against the coronavirus pandemic. Both countries are also working to meet their medical needs by keeping essential trade flowing.
