Tokyo stocks closed higher Thursday as sentient was bolstered by reports that Britain and the European Union are close to reaching a post-Brexit trade deal, while the United States agreeing to buy 100 million more doses of vaccines developed by Pfizer Inc. and BioNTech SE, added to an upbeat mood.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 143.56 points, or 0.54 percent, from Wednesday to close the day at 26,668.35.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, added 9.06 points, or 0.51 percent, to finish at 1,774.27.
Mining, iron and steel, and nonferrous metal issues comprised those that gained the most by the close of play.
