The General Secretariat for Egypt’s House of Representatives will resume work, on Sunday, to receive new members of Parliament (MPs) under the individual system.
The MPs will be received for a period of three days, in order to get their membership cards.
Parliament’s Secretary-General Mahmoud Fawzi said, “New members, either elected via the individual or party list systems, will receive their parliamentary membership cards this week.”
He also said that the reception committees are following the complete precautionary measures as set out by the Egyptian authorities to combat the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, to ensure the safety of the representatives.
The reception procedures will be stretched out over six days, beginning on 22 December and ending on 29 December, again to protect representatives against the coronavirus.
The committee will work in accordance with a certain schedule, receiving 90 members from governorates on Sunday, including Cairo, Giza, Qaliubiya, Alexandria, and Matrouh.
On Monday, it will receive a total of 108 members from the governorates of Port Said, Ismailia, Suez, Sharqeya, Daqahleya, Damietta, Gharbeya, Menoufiya, Beheira, and Kafr El-Sheikh. On Tuesday, the committee will receive 86 members from the governorates of Fayoum, Beni Suef, Minya, Assiut, Sohag, Qena, Aswan, the New Valley, the Red Sea, North Sinai, and South Sinai.
MPs elected via the party list system received their membership cards last week, also according to a schedule. A total of 100 party list MPs from Cairo, and the Nile Delta arrived to pick up their cards, followed by more 100 MPs from Upper Egypt on 23 December. This was followed by more 84 MPs from the eastern and western Delta.
Egypt’s two-stage parliamentary elections concluded on 8 December, with 567 seats filled. The election for the seat of the Deir Moas district in Minya was postponed for judicial reasons.
President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi is expected to name 28 parliament members, representing 5% of the total seats, in the next few days, thus bringing the number of MPs in the House of Representatives to a total of 596.
