An Egyptian delegation, on Sunday, visited the Libyan capital of Tripoli to inspect the Egyptian embassy facilities, which have been closed since December 2019, and discuss the activation of the 5+5 Libyan Joint Military Commission talks.
The 5+5 Libyan Joint Military Commission, or 5+5 Committee, brings together five military officials from eastern and western Libya. The commission is one of the outcomes of the Berlin Conference on Libya that was held in mid-January this year, and subsequently adopted by the UN Security Council.
The 5+5 Committee talks come in parallel with the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum (LPDF), which aims to set a draft political road map for presidential and parliamentary elections in Libya.
The move is the latest in the UN’s efforts to end the long-time crisis in Libya, which has led to the dispersion of power and the deterioration of the country’s economic conditions. The living standards of the Libyan people have also been commensurately and negatively affected by the ongoing political turmoil in the country.
The LPDF aims to end the transitional period through free, fair, inclusive, and credible parliamentary and presidential elections. It also aims to establish a functioning presidency council, and form a single, unified, inclusive and effective Libyan government, according to the UN.
