Egypt’s Minister of Environment Yasmine Fouad has announced the completion of the electronic interconnection for the continuous emissions self-monitoring system at Abu Qir power station’s two electricity production units.
According to a Ministry statement, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, and oxygen rates in the two units at the new power station will be monitored.
The monitoring devices’ signals have been linked to those elements, and the readings will be reviewed and matched with the National Network for Monitoring Industrial Emissions database.
The network includes 77 industrial institutions nationwide, 17 of which are located in Alexandria, Egypt’s second city and the country’s largest port.
Fouad said that the latest measures are part of the ministry’s interest in the power generation and transportation sectors.
These two sectors are responsible for 43% and 23%, respectively, of Egypt’s air pollution with particulate matter of less than 10 micrometres, which is the main influence on air quality.
The minister also said that there is continued cooperation with the Ministry of Electricity to preserve the country’s air quality, in light of the climate changes. The two ministries are working to bring major industries into the national network’s fold to monitor industrial emissions.
