COVID-19 vaccines to be available through electronic registration system: Health Minister

Egypt’s Minister of Health and Population Hala Zayed has reviewed, on Wednesday, the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) situation in the country, and her ministry’s efforts on the vaccination programme against the virus.

During her participation in the weekly cabinet meeting, Zayed said that the vaccines will be provided through the electronic registration system. This aims to neutralise the human element in this process, and to ensure the system’s governance in order to increase confidence between the state and the citizen.

She said that, in accordance with the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO), there are categories that will be prioritised in vaccination. These categories include medical workers, the elderly, and those with underlying health conditions.

The minister further noted that the vaccination process is expected to have an effect in terms of reducing the number of deaths. It will also contribute to reducing the symptoms of the disease, whilst preventing infection and limiting its spread.

Egypt has signed a contract with pharmaceuticals giant AstraZeneca to reserve 50,000 doses from the company’s vaccine stock that will be delivered in February.

Zayed also highlighted that Egypt is one of the first countries in the world that has put in place the preparations to confront and respond to infectious diseases.
