Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shoukry has emphasised the need for making more progress on nuclear disarmament in the world.
The Minister’s remarks came in a recorded statement for the high-level segment of the UN Conference on Disarmament in Geneva.
The conference began its work on Monday, and will continue until 26 February.
Shoukry also called on nuclear-weapon states to fulfil their obligations, as well as for full commitment to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).
The minister reviewed the efforts to rid the Middle East of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction (WMD).
He also highlighted the importance of the international community’s commitment to support these efforts to create a nuclear weapon-free zone in the region.
Shoukry pointed to the success of the first session of the United Nations conference on the establishment of a nuclear weapon-free zone and other WMDs in the Middle East.
Egypt is keen to continue constructively and actively participating in the disarmament conference, and looks forward to making further contributions during the various disarmament agenda meetings this year.
Ambassador Ahmed Ehab Gamal El-Din, Egypt’s permanent representative to the United Nations and other international organisations in Geneva, said that the Foreign Minister’s speech in the conference comes as part of Egypt’s keenness to participate effectively in the conference’s work.
The conference serves as the sole multilateral forum entrusted with the negotiation of treaties and conventions of international disarmament, and to which Egypt has been a member since its foundation in 1984.
