Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi expressed his country’s wish, on Tuesday, for the leaders of the Palestinian factions to achieve the desired goals during their second meeting in Cairo.
Al-Sisi’s remarks came during the second round of the Palestinian National Dialogue, which are taking place under Egypt’s auspices.
Representatives of the Palestinian factions are meeting to end the internal divisions and prepare for the country’s first parliamentary and presidential elections since 2006.
Last month, factions agreed to hold another meeting in Cairo in order to discuss the bases and mechanisms needed to complete the formation of the new National Council. This will come with the aim of developing the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO).
Egypt aims to ensure smooth Palestinian legislative and presidential elections on 22 May and 31 July, respectively, as well as the Palestinian National Council election on 31 August.
Following last month’s meeting, Cairo decided to reopen the Rafah border crossing in both directions for stranded Palestinian travellers.
