Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shoukry will visit Lebanon, on Wednesday, carrying a message from President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi to the latter’s Lebanese counterpart Michel Aoun.
Egyptian media reported that Shoukry will meet with Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament Nabih Berri and Prime Minister-designate Saad Hariri.
The Lebanese government is still awaiting a resolution to the political bickering that has been ongoing between the political factions in Lebanon.
Last week, the country’s Future Movement accused the Free Patriotic Movement, led by Gebran Bassil, of putting obstacles in the way of attempts to form the new government headed by Hariri.
This comes while anger on the Lebanese street continues, with further protests witnessed in recent weeks. Protesters who gathered near the Republican Palace in the capital, Beirut, issued a statement calling for President Aoun to resign, and for Hariri to apologise for forming the government.
Protesters raised slogans calling for a transitional government, stressing demands including achieving justice, accountability for corruption, and the resignation of the three presidents.
This is in addition to the demand to open a file on the culprit who imported the ammonium nitrate into the country that caused the massive Beirut Port explosion in August 2020.
