Egypt asserted, on Saturday, that it will take measures against a German company for its discrimination against an Egyptian woman for wearing an Islamic headscarf (hijab).

Nouran Hassanein, who currently resides in Germany, had applied for a job at the company, but was subject to discrimination on account of her wearing the headscarf.

Meanwhile, Minister of State for Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates’ Affairs, Nabila Makram, said that she had phoned the 28-year-old woman to assure her that Egypt is working to protect her rights.

The minister expressed her appreciation for the support provided by the Egyptian community, as part of the “Let’s Support Each Other” initiative launched by the ministry. The initiative is just one of the routes taken by Egypt to counter the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Hassanein completed her Master’s degree in Architecture at Germany’s Anhalt University of Applied Sciences, and worked for about a year in Berlin.

She applied for a job with a company in the country, and received an email to conduct an online interview, but a day before the interview the company sent her that she was rejected.

The company explained that, as they frequently deal face-to-face with clients, they cannot accept an employee who wears the hijab.
