Egypt strongly condemned, on Monday, a terrorist attack that targeted a security directorate checkpoint in the south-western Libyan city of Sabha on Sunday evening.
The attack resulted in the death of two Libyan officers, and the injury of four others. A security source in Sabha said that the attack was caused by a car bomb driven by a suicide bomber targeting a security gate in the city.
The source added that the car exploded as soon as it reached the gate, and hit vehicles and individuals working with Libya’s Ministry of Interior.
Egypt offered its sincere condolences and sympathy to the Libyan government and people, and to the families of the victims of those killed and injured, whilst wishing a speedy recovery for those injured.
Egypt also reiterated its full support for brotherly Libya against everything that affects its security and stability, and its support in the face of all forms of violence, extremism and terrorism.
On Sunday evening, the Islamist group ISIS claimed responsibility for the suicide attack. The Amaq Agency, the media arm of ISIS, published a statement and picture of the explosion via the Telegram application, stating that the attack killed four people.
The group added that the operation was carried out by one of its elements and targeted a checkpoint belonging to the militia led by General Khalifa Haftar.
