Egypt, Finland, Burkino Faso discuss Nile Dam developments, joint relations

Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shoukry received a phone call, on Thursday, from Antonio Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations.

The phone call touched on several regional and international issues, including the Ethiopian dam issue.

During the conversation, Guterres affirmed his aspiration for continued coordination and consultation between Egypt and the UN regarding various regional and international issues. This is with the aim of achieving security, stability, and hoped-for prosperity.

The conversation focused on the latest developments relating to the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), and the recent developments to achieve any progress in this regard.

For his part, Shoukry stressed Egypt’s firm position rejecting any unilateral measures related to filling the dam’s reservoir and the need to reach a binding legal agreement on the rules for filling and operating the GERD. These aim to achieve the interests of the three countries involved in negotiations on the dam, namely Egypt, Sudan, and Ethiopia.

The minister further stressed the need for international parties to push Ethiopia to engage seriously and with a sincere political will in the negotiations, in order to reach the desired agreement.
