Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shoukry headed to the US city of New York, on Sunday, in preparation for the scheduled session of the United Nations (UN) Security Council.

The session, which will be held on Thursday upon the request of Egypt and Sudan, is set to address the issue of the disputed Ethiopian dam.

Ahmed Hafez, Spokesperson for Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said that Shoukry is also scheduled to hold a series of meetings with his counterparts, permanent delegates to the UNSC, and UN officials.

These meetings will provide Shoukry with the opportunity to explain Egypt’s firm position towards the issue of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).

This position is based on reaching a legally binding agreement on filling and operating the dam. This is in a manner that takes into account the interests of the three involved countries and preserves Egypt’s rights and water interests.
