Egypt’s National Telecom Regulatory Authority (NTRA) has approved the use of the Voice over LTE (VoLTE) technology in the local market.
VoLTE is an IP-based data transmission technology that delivers both call and data services over a 4G network. VoLTE offers high-definition quality phone calls by using LTE networks instead of legacy voice networks. As such, VoLTE-to-VoLTE calls are crystal-clear, with almost no background noise.
Mobile operators in Egypt had applied to obtain the NTRA’s approval to use the VoLTE technology on their networks. The NTRA agreed to start offering the service after the companies had fulfilled the technical and regulatory requirements.
NTRA said that about 15 million users, whose smartphones support VoLTE technology, can benefit from the new service. It is expected that this number will increase in conjunction with the increase in the penetration rates of smartphones that support this technology in the Egyptian market.
