Egypt’s Minister of Environment Yasmine Fouad said the municipal solid waste collection system consists of three programmes: infrastructure development, operation contracts, and awareness and institutional support.
It comes during the Environment Minister’s inspection of the preparations and equipment of cleaning and waste collection companies in Cairo on Tuesday, in preparation for activating the waste system contracts in a number of Cairo neighbourhoods.
Fouad noted the importance of the waste law, which clarifies the roles and responsibilities between the government, the citizen, civil society, and the private sector. She explained that the waste law was ratified in October last year, and the executive regulations have been completed and sent to the cabinet to be discussed.
Cairo’s new waste system is to be run through the two companies “Irtiqa” for integrated services and waste recycling and “Enviromaster” for environmental services and waste recycling to carry out collection and transport services for garbage, street cleanliness, public utilities, recycling, treatment and safe sanitary burial of waste.
Fouad added that the new waste law provides the opportunity for private sector companies to work in the system. She further explained that there are different roles for all ministries and agencies involved in that system.
