Reviving Historic Cairo initiative has attracted great interest, not only at the local level in Egypt, but from all those interested in preserving cultural heritage worldwide, according to European Union Ambassador in Cairo Christian Berger.
His remarks came during his speech at the opening of a workshop at the Museum of Egyptian Civilization. The workshop was held within the framework of cooperation between Egypt and Spain in the field of antiquities restoration, through the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, the Alhambra Palace Heritage Authority, and the Generalife in Granada, Spain. The workshop will allow the exchange of experiences between the two sides in this field.
Ambassador Berger, the Cultural Counselor to the Embassy of Spain, the Director of the Museum of Egyptian Civilization, and other officials attended the opening ceremony.
“The workshop is being held at a stage that highlights the process of reviving Historic Cairo, an initiative that has attracted great interest, not only at the local level in Egypt, but from all those interested in preserving cultural heritage worldwide,” Berger said. “This project is part of an important cooperation between the European Union and Egypt in research and innovation, as well as in cultural heritage, long-term, with the participation of the European Union and member states.”
The antiquities restoration workshop runs from 19 to 23 September, in cooperation with the World Antiquities Fund in Spain (ILUCIDARE). It is an ongoing project within the programme funded by the European Union to preserve cultural heritage as a source of creativity and innovation, in cooperation with the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities.
Conservation experts from the Alhambra Palace Heritage Authority, Generalife, and the International Center for the Study of Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage will participate in this workshop.
The first series of the workshop activities, held on 19-20 September, was available to the public, where experts explained their vision in the restoration and preservation of antiquities, as well as techniques for restoring antiquities from mosaics inlaid with faience.
The second series of activities, to be held on 21-23 September, will see the participation of international professors and experts in the field of restoration and revitalization of Ibrahim Al Kalashni Tekke and Dome. The events include field visits to archaeological areas in Historic Cairo.
