The Secretary-General of Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, expressed his concern over the rapid deterioration in the Lebanese-Gulf ties, the league said in a Saturday statement.
The crisis came as a result of the remarks by Lebanon’s Information Minister George Kordahi about the Saudi-led military campaign in Yemen that sparked outrage in the kingdom.
Aboul Gheit said that Lebanon should have defused the situation to prevent the major setback in Lebanon’s relations with its Arab surroundings in general and the Gulf in particular.
He expressed his confidence that the Lebanese President Michel Aoun and Prime Minister Najib Mikati would act quickly to ease the crisis.
Aboul Gheit hopes to put an end to the deterioration of those relations, calm the atmosphere with Saudi Arabia, and heal the rift caused by the positions of parties that wish and have an interest in dismantling the brotherhood that binds Lebanon to its brothers in the Gulf and Arab countries.
On Friday evening, Saudi Arabia recalled its ambassador to Lebanon and ordered the Lebanese ambassador to the kingdom to leave within 48 hours.
Bahrain and Kuwait have also asked the Lebanese ambassador to leave within 48 hours.
Aboul Gheit also appealed to Gulf countries “to reflect on the measures proposed to be taken to avoid further negative effects on the collapsing Lebanese economy.”
