Egypt has selected Souad by the renowned director Ayten Amin the country’s submission for the 94th Academy Awards (Oscars) Best International Feature Film, the selection committee announced on Thursday.
In a Facebook statement, the committee revealed that Souad has received the majority of votes. The selection committee included a group of renowned filmmakers and critics.
Souad has previously represented Egypt in the 2020 Festival de Cannes Official Selection, and the Berlin International Film Festival Official Selection.
The film follows the story of two teenage sisters who live in Zagazig city in Egypt’s Delta.
One of them is leading a virtual life, which she keeps as a secret from their conservative family.
The film was co-produced by three Egyptian producers, Sameh Awaad, Mohamed Hefzy, and Mark Lotfy, and the Tunisian producer Dora Bouchoucha.
The film’s director, Amin, is best known for her 2017 hit TV show Saabe’ Gaar (Seventh Neighbour). Souad is co-written by director Amin and Mahmoud Ezzat, marking their second collaboration after the ”Villa 69” film which was released in 2013l.
The film has also won a Cinegouna Springboard in the 2018 El Gouna film platform.
