On the 104th anniversary of the Balfour Declaration, the General Secretariat of the Arab League reiterated its full and continuous support for the Palestinian people in their just and legitimate struggle until they attain their freedom and independence.
The Arab League affirmed in a statement Tuesday that “a comprehensive, just and lasting peace has one path, which is to end the Israeli occupation of all Palestinian and Arab territories occupied since 1967, and to establish a Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital in accordance with the decisions of international legitimacy and the Arab Peace Initiative.”
On this fateful anniversary, the pan-Arab organisation also called on the UK to correct the “historical British mistake”, when then UK Foreign Secretary Arthur James Balfour promised to establish a national home for the Jewish people in Palestine.
On 2 November 1917, Balfour promised the Anglo-Jewish community that the British Empire, which was occupying Palestine at that time, would support the establishment of a national home for the Jewish people in Palestine.
The League called on Britain to recognise the Palestinian state on the 4 June 1967 lines, with East Jerusalem as its capital, in support of achieving a just, lasting and comprehensive peace following the vision of the two-state solution.
It also called on the international community to pressure Israel to stop its continuous crimes and to end its occupation of the Palestinian lands.
It also calls on the international community to assume its responsibilities in enforcing its decisions, putting an end to Israeli occupation, imposing sanctions on its colonial and settler regime, and providing international protection for the Palestinian people.
