Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi expressed deep concern over the “heinous assassination attempt” that targeted the Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi early Sunday.

The Egyptian President made a phone call on Sunday to the Iraqi Prime Minister to check on him.

During the phone conversation, Al-Sisi wished Al-Kadhimi and all the Iraqi people “security, stability and peace.”

For his part, the Iraqi prime minister appreciated the kind gesture, “which reflects the strength of historical relations between both countries.”

The president also called on all parties and political factions in Iraq to renounce violence and cooperate to preserve the stability of the state and achieve the aspirations of the Iraqi people.

In a post on his personal page on “Facebook”, Al-Sisi wrote, “When I condemn this brutal attempt, I pray to Allah to protect him and to achieve security and stability for Iraq and its people.”

On Sunday, security officials in Iraq said that Prime Minister Al-Kadhimi had survived an assassination attempt. An unknown drone bomb hit Al-Kadhimi’s residency at dawn in the heavily fortified Green Zone in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad.

Iran blamed foreign actors for the attack, which the United States considered a terrorist act.

Moreover, Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly condemned the failed assassination attempt against Al-Kadhimi, affirming that Egypt stands with Iraq against anything that threatens its security and stability, or undermines the cohesion of its internal front.

Egypt also stressed that “these miserable terrorist acts will not discourage brotherly Iraq from completing the march of national achievements, the latest of which was the holding of parliamentary elections last month.”

In a statement, Cairo called on all Iraqi parties to exercise self-restraint and give priority to the national interest to preserve the security, stability and sovereignty of brotherly Iraq.
