After two years of lockdown due to COVID-19, the Embassy of India in Cairo has resumed its cultural activities by hosting contemporary dance performances.
The 12-member Anveshana Dance Theatre group, led by Sangeeta Sharma, performed twice on 2 December at the Ismailia Cultural Palace in Ismailia, and on 4 December at the Port Said Cultural Palace in Port Said.
The troupe will continue its performances on 7 December at the Sayed Darwish Theatre in Alexandria. The event is sponsored by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR).
Sangeeta Sharma, the Founding Director of Anveshana, has won several accolades herself. Anveshana focuses on social issues and the internal conflicts of human beings. Under the ICCR umbrella, she performed and conducted dance workshops in Germany, South Korea, and Seychelles.
Anveshana may be defined as modern Indian dance with contemporary expressions but indigenous and essentially Indian in nature wherein the tradition of abstraction is explored. Dancers employ Yoga and Martial arts like Kalaripayattu and Chhau to express contemporary themes.
