Egyptian health authorities have identified the country’s first cases of the omicron variant of the coronavirus.
Three people were found to have the variant among 26 travellers who tested positive for coronavirus at Cairo International Airport, the Health Ministry said in a statement late Friday.
The Ministry of Health said that the three cases were placed in an isolation hospital, noting that two of them didn’t show any symptoms, while the third one was suffering mild symptoms.
The Ministry’s statement did not provide further details concerning the nationality of the infected people. The Health Ministry Spokesperson said that the three Omicron cases came from one of the countries that reported cases of the new variant.
The ministry added it has took all precautionary measures following the detection of the Omicron cases, including tracing all people who came into contact with the infected cases, stressing that the country’s tracing and surveillance system detected no more Omicron cases at any of the airports or seaports.
