Egypt’s Minister of Environment Yasmine Fouad and Governor of South Sinai Khaled Fouda inspected the current treatment and disposal system at the waste sorting plant in the Khanasir area in Sharm El-Sheikh.
The visit aimed to determine the current status of the waste system in the city prior to Sharm El-Sheikh hosting the World Youth Forum (WYF) and its preparations for the 27th Conference of Parties on Climate Change (COP27).
In a statement, the Ministry of Environment said that the visit comes within the framework of the directives of President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi to raise the efficiency of the municipal waste system; overcome the problems of waste accumulation, treatment, and safe disposal; and stop environmental deterioration through an integrated waste system.
Furthermore, Minister Fouad noted that work is underway to develop an integrated system for waste management in Sharm El-Sheikh, which will include a smart system for waste management through collection, transportation, street cleaning, public facilities, and the provision of distinguished services.
This includes treatment services, safe disposal, optimal operation, and development of treatment facilities, in addition to the proper management of the sanitary burial cell that was established within the infrastructure of the hygiene system that is carried out at the level of the republic.
