German Minister of Foreign Affairs Annalena Baerbock will pay her first visit to Egypt from 11 to 12 February 2022.

Baerbock intends to meet her Egyptian counterpart Sameh Shoukry as well as other members of the Egyptian government.

She plans to discuss Egyptian-German relations and important regional issues that involve Egypt and Germany. She will also explore areas of cooperation in connection with the upcoming 27th Conference of Parties to the UN Convention on Climate Change (COP 27) that will be hosted by Egypt.

“I am pleased with such an early visit by the new foreign minister, which signals our keen interest in continuing high-level dialogue with Egypt on all regional and bilateral matters, as well as on world-wide cooperation in climate protection,” said German Ambassador to Cairo Frank Hartmann.

Egypt was selected to host the COP 27 in 2022. On 20 September, Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi expressed his country’s interest in hosting the summit and representing the African continent.

The COP is considered the largest and most important international event that the world witnesses every year.

President Al-Sisi met previous German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas in January last year in Cairo, where they affirmed the need to resume the Middle East peace process.

Egypt and Germany have a shared interest in stability. Egypt is a priority country for German development policy and for cultural relations and education policy. Up to March 2021, Germany’s bilateral trade with Egypt totalled $4.12bn.
