Zamalek drew with Atlético Petróleos de Luanda (2-2) in the opening game of the group stage of the CAF Champions League which was held at the Cairo International Stadium on 12 February.

Additionally, on Tuesday, Zamalek lost to Smouha (2-0) in the ninth gameweek of the Egyptian Premier League which was held at Borg El Arab Stadium in Alexandria. The league defeat was shocking for the fans and the board of directors of Zamalek.

Despite the administration’s anger, they decided not to dismiss head coach Patrice Carteron, as Zamalek will shortly face Angola’s Sagrada Esperança in the CAF Champions League next Saturday, in Angola.

The administration gave Carteron another opportunity to correct the path of Zamalek after three consecutive disappointing matches.

On his part, the French coach expressed his great sadness after the recent loss against Smouha, stressing that Zamalek did not deserve to lose, especially since the White Knight created many chances during the game.

Carteron added that Zamalek are currently going through a difficult period, pointing out that he called on the players to cohesion and return to the path of victories quickly in order to delight their fans.

On Thursday, Zamalek will start training in preparation for the Sagrada Esperança tie on Saturday. Zamalek have to achieve the three points to maintain their chances of qualifying for the quarter-finals of the CAF Champions League.

On the other hand, Sagrada Esperança also lost to Moroccan Wydad 3-0 in the first round of the group stage.
