Egypt’s Acting Minister of Health and Population Khaled Abdel Ghaffar received on Saturday the Evaluation Committee of the African Union Commission in a meeting that aimed to discuss ways to establish a headquarters for the African Medicines Agency (AMA) in Egypt.
During the meeting, the minister expressed Egypt’s keenness to encourage the governments of African countries to increase investment in the pharmaceutical industry, stressing that Egypt’s entry into the AMA in July 2021 had a major role in unifying legislation and laws related to the circulation, registration, and pricing of drugs between countries.
He also pointed out that allocating a headquarters for the agency in Egypt will support cooperation and increase the effectiveness of the pivotal role of the Egyptian state in the African continent in the field of pharmaceuticals.
Furthermore, the minister added that a technical committee was formed from the Egyptian Drug Authority to select a temporary headquarters for the AMA in Giza, noting that Egypt seeks through cooperation with the AMA to serve all African peoples and supply the continent with Egyptian-made drugs, serums, and vaccines after achieving self-sufficiency.
The minister also invited the AMA delegation to visit and inspect the temporary headquarters that was allocated for the agency.
