Minister of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shoukry participated on Sunday in an event organised by the American Chamber of Commerce in Cairo and the Office of the US presidential special envoy for climate that was held as part of a visit by a US ‘Green Trade Mission’ delegation to Cairo, which includes many companies and financing agencies interested in investing in green energy in Egypt.
Ahmed Hafez — Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs — said that the minister pointed out in his speech that the visit of the US mission comes within the framework of the joint Egyptian-American move to strengthen relations between the two countries at all levels.
He also said that the visit comes to activate the results of the strategic dialogue between Egypt and the US — which was held in Washington last November — as well as to explore the great opportunities available to increase US investments in Egypt, especially in the fields of renewable energy and green technologies.
Furthermore, Shoukry reviewed the state’s efforts to mitigate the repercussions of the global economic crisis resulting from the current geopolitical tensions, pointing to the rapid measures taken by the state to support economic stability, stimulate investments, and protect the most vulnerable groups in society as part of the ambitious economic reform programme implemented by the government since 2016.
Additionally, the FM touched on the upcoming Egyptian presidency of the UN Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on climate change (COP 27) that will be held in Sharm El-Sheikh this November.
He also stressed Egypt’s keenness to witness the active participation of all parties concerned with international climate action, including representatives of the private sector, and to give the conference the opportunity to present their efforts in this regard, given the important role the private sector plays in efforts to counter climate change.
In this regard, the FM added that the visit of the green trade mission is a step in the right direction in the efforts to turn climate pledges into reality on the ground.
