Minister of Environment Yasmine Fouad and Minister of Trade and Industry Nevine Gamea met on Wednesday to review the latest developments regarding Egypt’s hosting of the UN Conference of Parties on Climate Change (COP27) that will be held in Sharm El-Sheikh this November.
During the meeting, Gamea said that Egypt’s hosting of the climate summit represents a great opportunity to review the state’s efforts to support the transition to a green economy in various productive and service sectors, reduce carbon emissions, confront global warming and climate changes, and achieve sustainability.
She further explained that the meeting reviewed the role of industry and the private sector in the summit’s activities, as the agenda for the day dedicated to the Egyptian industry is currently being finalised, in addition to the exhibition to be held in the Green Zone, which will include Egyptian environmentally friendly industrial products as well as the latest technologies used in this context.
The Green Zone will also include a special initiative in African countries that will target African companies working in the fields of energy efficiency, clean and renewable energy usage, and circular economy projects, especially in light of Egypt’s current presidency of the COMESA grouping.
For her part, Fouad said that within the framework of the preparation of the Higher Committee to host the conference, the committee approved the existence of a special day for reducing emissions within the unofficial days of the conference entrusted to the Ministries of Trade and Industry and Petroleum and Mineral Resources.
The day will include a number of heavy industries with the aim of opening a logical and scientific dialogue with representatives of these industries to hear learn about their views on how they are committed to reducing emissions to combat the effects of climate change and the mechanism that will be implemented in this regard.
Fouad also confirmed that for the first time, reducing emissions will be discussed in climate conferences, as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs coordinated with the UN’s Secretariat to launch this day, noting that the day will include a number of sessions, including one for Africa and another for the private sector.
