The 2022 Mediterranean Games was held from 25 June to 6 July 2022 in Oran, Algeria.
The Pharaohs kicked off their handball competition with a first-place finish in the group stage ahead of Tunisia, Serbia, and Italy. In the semi-finals, they came face to face with North Macedonia, and the game was completely dominated by the Egyptians as they finished on top with a final result of 34-20.
Having no time to rest, the Egyptian handball team will return to Cairo to prepare for the upcoming African Handball Championship.
Mohamed Al-Alfi, Chairperson of the Organizing Committee of the Championship, announced that the tournament will be held from 9 to 19 July, at the Hassan Mustafa Complex and the October International Court.
Al-Alfi said that the teams of Senegal, Angola, Morocco, and Congo have already arrived in Egypt and are training in closed camps, in preparation for the tournament. He explained that the rest of the participating teams will arrive on 9 July in Cairo.
He revealed that Kenya withdrew from the upcoming tournament, and that the African Handball Confederation studies inviting Libya, instead.
14 teams will participate in the tournament, which have been divided into 4 groups, as follows:
Group A: Egypt – Morocco – Cameroon.
Group B: Algeria – Gabon – Guinea – Kenya.
Group C: Tunisia – Cape Verde – Nigeria.
Group D: Angola – DR Congo – Senegal – Zambia.
The top five teams in the tournament standing will qualify directly for the 2023 World Men’s Handball Championship in Poland and Sweden.
