Minister of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shoukry reviewed during a telephone call on Saturday with British Crown Prince Charles Egypt’s vision and goals for the upcoming session of the UN Conference of Parties on Climate Change (COP27).
This was done within the framework of the ongoing consultations with all states and parties on the preparations for the COP27, which will be held in Sharm El-Sheikh this November.
Ahmed Hafez — Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs — said that Shoukry discussed Egypt’s vision and goals for the next session of the COP and the efforts it is currently making as part of its preparations for the presidency of the conference.
Furthermore, the two sides called on all states parties to update their nationally determined contributions in accordance with the Paris Agreement and raise the ambition of their climate action in all its components, including support and funding for developing countries in the areas of reducing emissions, adapting to the negative effects of climate change, and building their resilience.
In this context, FM Shoukry also praised the role played by the UK in the framework of its presidency of the COP26, especially the effort made by Prince Charles in supporting and promoting global climate action, particularly from the private sector and non-governmental bodies.
Shoukry also referred in particular to the Sustainable Markets Initiative launched by Prince Charles, which includes a number of major international companies.
Moreover, he stressed that Egypt looks forward to working with the prince in the coming period to strengthen the participation of the private sector in the global effort to confront climate change.
He also expressed his hope to mobilise support for the various sectoral initiatives that Egypt will launch during the conference and to encourage broad participation from all governmental and non-governmental parties to participate in its activities, as well as to participate effectively in the various thematic days that the conference will include.
