Minister of Environment Yasmine Fouad presented during the Sustainable Energy Transition session at the World Economic Forum Egypt’s visions for the presidency of the upcoming COP27, especially in the field of energy transition and its importance at this critical time.

During her virtual participation in the forum, Fouad stressed that Egypt seeks to ensure that the upcoming UN Conference of Parties on Climate Change (COP27) that will be held in Sharm El-Sheikh this November serves as an implementation conference that takes into account the Paris Agreement and builds on the successes achieved at the COP26 in various tracks, such as mitigation, adaptation, losses, damages, and financing.

Furthermore, Fouad presented a set of messages about the importance of energy transition, the most important of which is that energy is inevitable for the continuation of life on the planet, but the most important thing is to provide sustainable green energy.

She added that Egypt was keen, through the conference’s presidential programme, to allocate an energy day to start the discussion on implementing a just and ambitious energy transition, including various success stories around the world at different levels and the availability of technology and financing packages for them.

Discussions during the COP27’s energy day will also address the private sector’s huge investments in wind and solar energy and green hydrogen, which could provide countries and the private sector to achieve their commitments in the Paris Agreement.

The minister also referred to the implementation of Carbon Neutrality Day during the conference’s activities, given that is an urgent topic that must be discussed, noting the role of heavy industries — such as cement, iron, steel, and petroleum — in achieving this goal through a real commitment to low-carbon paths, the provision of appropriate and applicable technologies, and the necessary financing packages to implement these technologies.

Finally, Fouad reviewed some national efforts to confront the effects of climate change, including the launch of the 2050 National Climate Change Strategy.
