Egypt’s Minister of International Cooperation Rania Al-Mashat concluded her bilateral meetings within the activities of the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Sunday with a meeting with Navid Hanif — Assistant Secretary-General for Economic Development in the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA).
During the meeting, Al-Mashat discussed ways to enhance joint action to stimulate cooperation between countries of the global south in a way that supports efforts to exchange development experiences and transfer knowledge in a way that enhances integration between developing countries, emerging economies, and African countries.
For his part, Hanif thanked Al-Mashat for the efforts made to hold a joint workshop on capacity building and integrating climate change adaptation practices into development cooperation efforts within the activities of the second edition of the Egypt Forum for International Cooperation and Development Finance, noting that the workshop was a great success, which enhances the chances of repeating this experience in various topics, including effective development cooperation and benefiting from the Egyptian experience in matching development funds with the UN sustainable development goals (SDGs) in order to support capacity building efforts.
Notably, the training events that were held within the Egypt Forum for International Cooperation and Development Finance witnessed a great turnout with the participation of representatives from 17 African countries, in addition to development partners and the private sector. The training events lasted 30 hours over the 7th and 8th of September.
It is worth noting that the Ministry of International Cooperation — in cooperation with the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Finance, and Environment, and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa — organised the Egypt-ICF 2022 Forum and the meeting of African Ministers of Economy, Finance, and Environment under the auspices and presence of President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi.
The events witnessed a high-level international and regional turnout from UN organisations, heads of international financial institutions, and the private sector.
About 20 discussion sessions, workshops, and round tables were held during the events on unifying messages and visions to mobilise the efforts of the international community to support the climate agenda in Africa and to prepare for the Finance Day that will be part of the activities of the upcoming 27th UN Conference of Parties on Climate Change that will be held in Sharm El-Sheikh this November.
Over the past few days, Al-Mashat participated in the meetings of the 77th session of the UN General Assembly under the slogan ‘Solutions through Solidarity, Sustainability, and Science,’ amid unprecedented global repercussions due to the Russian-Ukrainian War and the economic effects of the coronavirus pandemic.
The meetings also dealt with a number of important issues that concern the international community, on top of which are food insecurity, the energy price crisis, and global supply chain disruptions.
