Captain Ibrahim Traore, who led a coup to topple Lieutenant Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba on Sept. 30, has been officially appointed to lead the transitional period of Burkina Faso, according to a agreement reached by a national assembly Friday evening in Ouagadougou, the capital city.
Traore Friday signed a new transitional charter and the act of confirmation of his designation as the president of Burkina Faso and supreme chief of the armed forces.
More than 300 delegates of different components of the society amended and validated the 27-article-charter which should guide the Burkinabe transition for a period of 21 months.
According to the transitional charter, the transitional government will be composed of a prime minister and a maximum of 25 ministers, while the transitional legislative assembly will consist of 71 members.
The coup led by Traore was the second one this year in the country since former President Roch Marc Christian Kabore was overthrown on Jan. 24.
