The MENA Tour has successfully completed 2 events on its scheduled Egyptian Swing in Cairo over the past 12 days.
Madinaty Golf Club played host to back-to-back events and provided the players with a world class venue on which to test their skills. The local weather threw everything it had at the players over the 2 events including rain, cold temperatures & gusting winds.
Players coped with weather delays and challenging course set up over the 2 events to finally get both events competed over 54 holes each time.
Round 2 of event 2 needed to be completed early on the morning of day 3 as poor light had halted play the previous evening. Overnight leader, Brandon Robinson Thompson (ENG) finished with an impressive birdie in the 18tth holes to take a 2 shot lead over Curtis Knipies (ENG) and Jacabo Vecchi Fossa (ITA)
Thompson had a solid opening 9 in round 3 carding 8 pars & 1 birdy. Knipes dropped 2 shots on the opening 9 as did Fossa with a double bogey and a single birdy. Ireland’s Gavin Moynihan held his nerve to shoot level on the front 9 to remain 4 shots off the lead coming into the final 9 holes of the series.
Thompson kicked into a higher gear on the back nine with birdies on Hole 12, 13, & 16. He carded a single bogey on the par 3 11th , but he was in position to hold off the charge of Fossa & event 1 winner Ben Jones.
Thompson is delighted with this win, his first in 18 months. He is looking forward to playing many more MENA Tour event over the coming months.
The top 3 placed amateur players were Andreas Weiderman (SWE), Jules Lauer (FRA) and Mohamed Abou El Ela (EGYP)
MENA Tour’s Stuart Daly praised Madinaty Golf Club management for the tremendous presentation of the golf & support from the team over the Egyptian Swing Series. “This golf course really challenged the players in these windy conditions. The course held up so well to all the play and the team members were immersed in the events as much as the players themselves. We hope to return to Madinaty Golf Club in the future & we are certain that the players will want to see this venue on our calendar of events over the coming years. Our sincere thanks to all at Madinaty Golf Club for the wonderful support & hospitality whilst we’ve been in Egypt.”
The MENA Tour will share details of the next series of events shortly with several more events planned in the coming months.
It is the goal of the MENA Tour to expose regional golf professional & elite amateurs to world class golf tournaments at leading facilities throughout the MENA region. MENA Tour believes strongly in the development of junior players with the hope of seeing them on the world’s golfing stage & on the official world rankings.
