The Press Syndicate, headed by Diaa Rashwan, started on Saturday receiving candidacy papers for the syndicate’s midterm elections.
Three over-age candidates submitted their candidacy papers; Abdel Raouf Khalifa, Abu Al-Saud Muhammad, and Ahmed Alawi.
The Board Council of the syndicate had called on the General Assembly to convene on 3 March at the syndicate’s headquarters to vote – if a quorum is reached – on the seat of the president and half of the council’s seats. Elections are conducted as usual under judicial supervision.
Rashwan will not run for the seat for two consecutive terms, in accordance with the law. The committee includes extended members of the Council, and the elections are held under judicial supervision.
The midterm renewal is taking place for the captain’s seat, which is currently occupied by Rashwan, and 6 seats, 3 of which are over-age, occupied by the union’s deputy, Khaled Miri, the head of the Health and Social Care Committee, Muhammad Shabana, and council member Hisham Younes, and 3 under-age seats occupied by Muhammad Yahya Youssef, Mahmoud Kamel and Hammad Al-Ramahi.
Article 43 of the Syndicate Law stipulates that the term of membership in the Syndicate Council is four years, and every two years the membership of half of the members of the Council expires. After the end of the second year, votes are held among the members to terminate the membership of six of them. The term of membership of the captain is two years, and he may not be elected more than twice in a row.
