British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak thanked President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi for Egypt’s support in the operation to evacuate British embassy staff from Khartoum on Sunday. This came during a phone call between the two leaders, according to a press statement issued by Prime Minister’s Office, 10 Downing Street.
The two sides discussed further options for ensuring safe passage for civilians wanting to leave Sudan.
The leaders shared their deep concerns about the escalation in violence in Sudan and the risk of worsening security and humanitarian situation.
Al-Sisi illustrated the efforts undertaken by Egypt to encourage all parties to reach a cease-fire and put an end to the suffering of the brotherly Sudanese people.
He stressed the need to deal positively with all efforts to calm down and activate dialogue and the political track, with the aim of sparing Sudan the catastrophic consequences of this conflict on its stability.
They agreed that the UK and Egypt would coordinate with other international partners, including the African Union, on urgent diplomatic efforts to secure a ceasefire and support the transition to a stable civilian government.
Sudan has been witnessing deadly armed clashes between the Sudanese army and the RSF in the capital Khartoum and other areas since April 15.
According to the country’s health ministry, the deadly clashes have left at least 424 people killed and about 3,730 wounded by Saturday.
