Non-residents may import a vehicle duty-free for personal use up to six months if the vehicle is imported in conjunction with the owner’s arrival. There may be extension with the approval of the Minister or his representative. The car’s owner shall pay a fee for the suspension of taxes and fees on importation. The fee has been modified to $100 or its equivalent for the first three months, and $175 for the next three months. This amount shall be increased by 50% in the case of extending the period, and $50 or its equivalent for each of the cars arriving with a tourist group, on the condition that the release period of these cars does not exceed one month.
Ghattouri said, in a statement issued by the Ministry of Finance Saturday, that the passenger cars of foreign investors are temporarily released within the limits of the temporary residence period proven on the passport and a maximum of three years. The same applies to experts and professors recruited by government agencies, including universities and schools, and experts of foreign companies contracting with them, as well as foreign airlines and airlines operating on regular lines to, from and through the Egyptian territory. These rules are applied after the suspension of tax and other taxes and fees are paid and whose categories have been modified to become $150 or so for cars with a liter capacity of 1600 cc for no longer than three months or part thereof, and $200 or its equivalent for a period exceeding three months, with a maximum of six months, and cars with a liter capacity of more than 1600 cc up to 2000 cc are $300 or its equivalent for a period of no longer than three months or part thereof, in addition to $400 or its equivalent for more than three months, with a set maximum of six months.
He pointed out that payment is made for suspending other taxes and fees, whose categories have been modified to become for cars with a liter capacity of more than 2000 cc, making the amount paid $500 or its equivalent for a period of no longer than three months or part thereof, and $700 or its equivalent for no longer than three months and a maximum of six months.
As for the cars of oil or mineral exploration companies, and the cars of foreign experts working in those companies, the fee for suspending tax payment shall be $500 or its equivalent every six months or part thereof.
Ghaturi also explained that payment is required for the suspension of tax and other taxes and fees at $50 or its equivalent for each unit per month to temporarily release the passenger cars of foreigners coming to the country and the related machinery, equipment, and devices necessary for international and local races, under the supervision of the General Authority for Tourism Activation, for a period of one month, and may be extended for other periods.
