Secretary-General of the Arab League Ahmed Aboul-Gheit met with EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell in Cairo on Sunday over the recent developments in the Middle East.
During their meeting, Aboul-Gheit and Borrell agreed on the principles to achieve a just, lasting and comprehensive peace for the Palestinian-Israeli conflict in accordance with the resolutions of international legitimacy that guarantee the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the basis of the two-state solution and the Arab Peace Initiative, the Cairo-based Arab League said in a statement.
They also discussed possible ways to address the root causes of illegal immigration in the Mediterranean, and agreed upon promoting institutional cooperation between the Arab League and the EU, according to the statement.
The two sides also exchanged views regarding crises in regional countries, particularly the ways to relieve the humanitarian condition in conflict-ridden Sudan, they told a joint press conference after the meeting.
Borrell noted that food security is a high priority on the EU agenda, especially with regard to supporting countries most affected by the ongoing food crisis.
