The United States (US) joins international partners in supporting the United Nations mediation in Libya, said US Special Envoy to Libya Richard Norland.
In Sunday’s remarks, Norland added that there is a need to involve all Libyan institutions and key stakeholders, based on the work of the 6+6 Commission.
This must address all contested elements of the electoral framework in order to make it implementable, securing the inclusive political agreement necessary for the road to elections, and enabling all candidates to have equal opportunities.
The embassies of France, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom (UK), and the US confirmed their support for the efforts of the special representative of the secretary-general of the UN to Libya, Abdoulaye Bathily, in involving all Libyan parties in addressing the points of disagreement with the laws of the “6+6” committee to make them enforceable.
In a joint statement the embassies stressed the need to address all disputed elements in the electoral framework to make it feasible.
They stressed their support for securing the necessary comprehensive political agreement on the way to the elections, through an equal space for all candidates.
The statement of the five countries pointed out that the discussions on the road map should be part of the broader political negotiations facilitated by the UN.
The five embassies called on the need for Libya’s leaders to focus on working to respond to the ongoing demands of Libyans to hold presidential and parliamentary elections as soon as possible.
