Shoukry to attend UN General Assembly, other high-level events in New York

Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry left for New York on Saturday to participate in the high-level segment of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly, which will start on September 18. The session is held under the theme of “Rebuilding Trust and Reviving Global Solidarity” to strengthen joint action towards achieving the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals, as well as peace, prosperity, and development for all.

The Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Ahmed Abu Zeid, said that Shoukry’s agenda will include several summits and high-level events of special importance. He will address the UN General Assembly on September 23, and take part in the Sustainable Development Goals Summit and the Climate Ambition Summit. He will also chair the ministerial meeting on loss and damage and the Global Forum on combating terrorism, which Egypt co-chairs with the European Union (EU).

Shoukry will also hold meetings of an economic nature to attract investments to Egypt and introduce the measures taken by the government to encourage foreign investment. He will speak at the Business Council for International Understanding (BCIU) and the US Council on Foreign Relations, and meet with officials of the World Economic Forum.

Shoukry will also attend several important ministerial meetings to discuss the most pressing international and regional issues that are a priority for Egypt. These include the preparatory ministerial meeting for the future summit, the coordination meeting of Arab foreign ministers, the ministerial meeting of neighboring countries of Sudan, and the ministerial meeting to support the humanitarian response in Sudan and the region, which Egypt organizes in cooperation with some international partners.

He will also join the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) foreign ministers conference, the ministerial meeting of the Peacebuilding Commission, the tripartite meeting (Egypt – Cyprus – Greece), and the meeting of the Palestinian Assistance Coordination Committee (AHLC). He will also participate in the European/Arab ministerial meeting to revive the peace process, the meeting of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), and the meeting of the tripartite mechanism (Egypt – Iraq – Jordan).

Shoukry will also meet with foreign ministers and heads of participating delegations, as well as media outlets from different regions.
