An Israeli army tank  has “accidentally” hit an Egyptian border surveillance post, injuring a number of military surveillance personnel, Egyptian Armed Forces Spokesperson Gharib Abdel-Hafez said in a Sunday statement.

He added that the Egyptian watch tower was “accidentally” hit by shell fragments from an Israeli tank amid the ongoing clashes around the Gaza Strip.

He said that the Egyptian personnel sustained minor injuries.

The Israeli side immediately expressed regret for the unintentional incident and are investigating it, he indicated.

“The IDF (Israeli military) expresses sorrow regarding the incident” near the Kerem Shalom area, an Israeli army statement said.

“A short while ago, an IDF tank accidentally fired and hit an Egyptian post adjacent to the border in the area of Kerem Shalom. The incident is being investigated and the details are under review.”

Around half a century has passed since the “last of the battles” between Egypt and Israel, during which nearly 45 years of peace have prevailed between the two countries.
