The Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) reported an increase in the total financial position of banks operating in the local market, excluding the CBE, to about EGP 14.742trn by the end of the third quarter of 2023. In its quarterly report on the financial soundness of banks, the CBE explained that on the asset side, cash balances in banks reached EGP 106.569bn by the end of September 2023. The balances held by some banks domestically amounted to EGP 2.526trn, while their balances with foreign banks reached EGP 315.506bn.
The CBE added that lending and discount balances for customers amounted to EGP 5.098trn. The banks’ portfolio of securities and investments in treasury bills reached EGP 5.018trn, and the size of other assets, not specified by the CBE, amounted to EGP 1.677bn.
On the liabilities side, the CBE stated that the capital of the banks reached EGP 359.515bn. Reserves recorded EGP 505.325bn, while the balance of provisions reached EGP 324.725bn.
The banks’ obligations towards each other domestically amounted to EGP 685.571bn, while their obligations towards foreign banks reached EGP 441.472bn. The total deposits amounted to EGP 9.765trn. The balances of long-term bonds and loans reached EGP 544.362bn, and the size of other liabilities, not specified by the CBE, reached EGP 2.116trn.
