Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian held a telephone conversation on 2 December, at the Iranian side’s initiative, during which they planned further high-level contacts, according to the official website of the Russian President.

The conversation covered current international and regional issues, and explored the expansion of cooperation between Moscow and Tehran in various sectors, building on agreements reached during their previous meeting in Kazan, TV BRICS reported.

The two leaders previously met on 23 October at the BRICS summit in Kazan. At that time, President Putin highlighted the opportunities presented by Iran’s accession to BRICS for enhanced international collaboration. He stressed the importance of strengthening the positive momentum in bilateral trade and economic relations, prioritising major joint projects, including the North-South transport corridor.

President Pezeshkian, in turn, described Russian-Iranian ties as actively developing across all areas. He expressed optimism about the imminent signing of a comprehensive strategic partnership agreement between the two nations.

Prior to the Kazan meeting, Presidents Putin and Pezeshkian had also met in Turkmenistan, where they participated in the International Forum “Interconnection of Times and Civilisations – the Basis of Peace and Development”. The 2 December phone call served to further solidify the commitment to ongoing collaboration between the two countries.
