Egypt’s Foreign Minister, Badr Abdelatty, conducted a series of urgent diplomatic calls on Wednesday, December 4, to address the deteriorating situation in Syria.

The calls come amid reports of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), an al-Qaeda affiliate, entering northeastern neighbourhoods of Hama after intense fighting on Thursday. In Aleppo, which fell to Islamist rebels on Friday, Sham FM reported widespread theft linked to escaped prisoners from Aleppo Central Prison.

Abdelatty spoke with several key figures, including Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, Syrian Foreign Minister Bassam Sabbagh, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, and UAE Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan. He also exchanged views with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

During these conversations, Abdelatty discussed the unfolding events in northern Syria and their potential impact on regional stability.

He reiterated Egypt’s unwavering commitment to Syrian sovereignty and territorial integrity, highlighting the urgent need to protect civilians.

Moreover, The minister stressed the importance of collaborative regional and international action to de-escalate tensions and prevent further instability.

Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt’s complete rejection of sectarian incitement and any actions that undermine the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states.

These calls are part of Egypt’s ongoing efforts to monitor the situation and engage with key regional and international actors. The calls were made on the instructions of the Egyptian President.
