Sharif Welcomes Al-Sharaa Assumption of Syrian Presidency

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday welcomed Ahmed Al-Sharaa assumption of the Syrian presidency for a transitional phase. Al-Sharaa’s appointment was announced on Wednesday, less than two months after he led a campaign that resulted in the removal of Bashar Assad from power.

“We welcome Mr. Ahmed Al-Sharaa’s assumption of office as President of the Syrian Arab Republic during the transitional phase and hope that the new leadership will be able to bring peace, progress and prosperity to the brotherly people of Syria,” Sharif wrote on X.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi also congratulated Al-Sharaa on Friday, expressing on social media his “[wishes for his success in achieving the aspirations of the Syrian people toward greater progress and prosperity].”

On Thursday, Al-Sharaa announced his intention to form an inclusive transitional government representing diverse communities. This government will be responsible for establishing institutions and administering the country until free and fair elections can be held. The new Syrian administration also announced the suspension of the 2012 constitution.
