Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has expressed his intention for Brazil to host both the 2025 BRICS summit and the 30th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention on Climate Change (COP30), emphasizing Brazil’s commitment to strengthening democracy, leading the energy transition, and attracting investment, according to the Brazilian government’s press service.
Speaking at a press conference at the Palácio do Planalto, Lula da Silva highlighted the importance of both events. “I am not being humble when I tell you that we held the most important G20 in history. Now we will repeat this with the largest BRICS and hold the best ever COP in the heart of the Amazon,” he said, as reported by TV BRICS. He added that COP30, to be held in Belém, would not only focus attention on climate change but also showcase the lives of the Amazon region’s indigenous peoples.
Lula da Silva also touted Brazil’s trade achievements, noting that the country has opened over 300 new markets for agricultural products in the past two years. He announced that Brazil will host the first major event of the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty, an initiative launched during Brazil’s G20 presidency, with a meeting of African agriculture ministers scheduled for May.
“We will hold a meeting to showcase what we are doing well in the fight against hunger in Brazil, take them to the field to see what is happening, and organize a technical meeting coordinated by the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to transfer some of our knowledge to our African partners,” the president explained.
Lula da Silva also addressed the recently adopted tax reform, which he believes will make Brazil more attractive to foreign investors, noting that the legislation will take effect in 2027.
Brazil assumed the BRICS chairmanship on 1 January 2025. In 2024, Brazil held the presidency of the Group of Twenty (G20) and hosted the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro, where the launch of the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty was a key outcome.
