CAIRO: Australia s ambassador to Egypt presented a LE 63,000 check to the Rotary Club in Giza in support of its literacy program. We are pleased to help support such important initiatives, said Dr Robert Bowker after presenting the check to Nadia Hamdy, president of the Rotary Club of Giza Cosmpolitan. Our support for this project is part of the embassy s Direct Aid Program (DAP) which has a particular focus on addressing the needs of women and children, he explained. The project will help men and women in underprivileged areas enhance their reading, writing and vocational skills and health issues will also be addressed in the classes, said Hamdy. The project will train 75 teachers on using the Rotary Concentrated Language Encounter (CLE) method. It will also provide 180 people in the Giza area with various skills, including eight months of literacy instruction. The Australian program DAP is a small grants scheme which provides development assistance to NGOs in Egypt with a particular focus on addressing the needs of women and children. The Australian embassy funded this year other projects, including an antenatal clinic in Sadat City, the funding for women s literacy classes in Minya, and a project that facilitated women s access to legal aid.
