CAIRO: A shark killed a French tourist off Egypt s Red Sea coast, after she dived into the water to get closer to a big fish, a French embassy official said on Tuesday.

The 50-year-old woman was on a diving boat on Monday when she spotted a very big fish (and) jumped into the water to get closer, the official said.

Other passengers on board the boat were unable to help the woman, the official said.

The Red Sea is home to a variety of sharks, and some of them, such as the powerful and quick mako shark, are regarded as particularly dangerous for humans, but attacks are rare.

Recently there have been reported sightings of sharks as close as five meters from the shore. -AFP
