CAIRO: The recently established Copts for Egypt movement held a press conference Sunday at the Egyptian Center for Human Rights (ECHR) to outline the upcoming schedule of the movement’s work.

The movement was first made public last July with aims to lobby the government in issues concerning Egypt’s Coptic minority.

“We also want to attract people to support our movement, said ECHR spokesman Hani El-Gezeiry.

The goals of the conference are to clarify and reinforce the movement’s demands, the foremost being emphasizing the importance of the concept of citizenship, with “Citizenship is the answer the slogan of the movement.

“Without ensuring citizenship rights there won’t be any development in our country, El-Gezeiry said.

‘Copts for Egypt’ movement is planning to convey their message to President Hosni Mubarak, the National Democratic Party, the Shoura Council and the People’s Assembly.

Copts for Egypt had arranged to go on strike on Sept. 11 to voice their demands.

“Some people say the strike succeeded but others disagree. Either way, we respect those who criticize us and those who support us but not those who offend us. In my opinion it’s enough that the strike got some media attention, he added.

“It’s our duty to make the government listen to us. That’s what we are trying to do in all legitimate ways.
