CAIRO: Mohamed Sayed Ahmed, member of the People s Assembly (PA) affiliated to the National Democratic Party (NDP) accused the Ministry of Health of allowing the sale of expired interferon, the treatment of chronic Hepatitis C.
The scandal, reported by Al-Masry Al-Youm, is still under investigation by the PA s industrial committee, MP Sobhy Saleh told The Daily Star Egypt.
Saleh confirmed the accusation and added that it might be true and we are waiting for the ministry s response or facts that prove the incident.
Dr Hamdy El-Sayed, head of the Doctors’ Syndicate, defended the Ministry of Health, according to Al-Masry Al-Youm, and doubted the creditability of the accusation.
However when he was approached by The Daily Star Egypt, he refused to comment the issue saying that he was busy with patients.
The Ministry of Health was unavailable for comment.
This accusation comes on the heels of a public prosecutor’s investigation revealing severe negligence in the Ministry of Health’s blood unit, the pharmaceutical department and the National Center for Monitoring and Medical Research and government hospitals.
They all come under the jurisdiction of the health ministry and have come under scrutiny following Hidelina company’s contaminated blood bags case.
